Abstract

Language:

This paper examines the impact of aging on the resistance of organic coatings to cyclic mechanical stress, particularly in the context of protective coatings used for steel structures such as bridges. The objective is to evaluate how fatigue effects compromise the mechanical integrity of coatings subjected to repetitive stress, comparing as-received samples and those pre-exposed to damaging conditions like UV radiation. The experimental methodology involved testing a vinyl coating on St3S steel substrates through cyclic mechanical stress simulations, with one set of samples left in as-received form and the other exposed to UV radiation for three months. Findings indicate that coatings on stressed constructions display significantly lower durability compared to those on non-stressed objects, highlighting the deterioration of protective films under mechanical stress and external factors over time. The results collectively underscore the critical need for understanding the fatigue behavior of organic coatings in the maintenance and longevity of various steel structures, hence providing valuable insights into improving their performance in real-world applications.
