Abstract

Language:

In Australia and New Zealand, AS/NZS 2312 has long provided guidelines for the selection and specification of protective coatings, offering critical information for the industry. Recently, ISO 12944 was introduced, addressing similar aspects. This paper critically examines the contents of both standards, highlighting their similarities and differences in terms of specified coatings, presentation methods, durability expectations, and supplementary information regarding surface preparation and specifications. Both frameworks use atmospheric corrosivity to inform coating selection based on environmental conditions and durability requirements. However, notable discrepancies exist in the types of coatings advised and the overall guidance provided for practitioners. The discussion aims to clarify the essential elements of these standards and to assist professionals who are tasked with implementing either or both in their coatings methodologies. The comparative insights may enhance understanding and support effective decision-making in coating selections amidst an increasingly global market for corrosion protection solutions.
