Abstract

Language:

The extraction of Cu(II) from HCl media using Cyanex 923 in kerosene was investigated to understand the factors affecting this process. This study aimed to explore the effect of shaking time, aqueous phase acid concentration, extractant concentration, chloride ion concentration, various metal ions, and temperature on Cu(II) extraction efficiency. The methodology involved varying the concentrations of Cyanex 923 and HCl and observing the extraction percentages, which showed a maximum of 97.5 per cent extraction from 5 M HCl with 1 M extractant. Predictions about the composition of the extracted species were derived from slope analysis and extraction equilibrium modelling. Results indicated that extraction efficiency initially increased with the amount of HCl until a certain concentration after which it began to decline due to acid extraction by the extractant. Additionally, the thermodynamic data revealed negative values for enthalpy and entropy changes, implying that the formation of the extracted complex is an exothermic process. This research contributes to the development of efficient methods for copper recovery from chloride solutions, addressing both resource recovery and environmental concerns.
