The relationship between microbial metabolism and electron flow is a crucial aspect of microbial ecology that has implications for energy generation and bioremediation. This chapter explores the capacity of certain bacteria to utilize electrodes as respiratory electron acceptors, illustrating how electricity can be generated through microbial activity in anaerobic environments. The objective is to discuss the mechanisms behind bacteria's electron transfer processes and their applications in bioelectrochemical systems. Methodologically, the chapter reviews various studies that demonstrate electron movement across microbial membranes, as well as the potential of utilizing these processes in microbial fuel cells. Results indicate that not only can specific bacteria transfer electrons to electrodes, but they can also be harnessed for practical applications such as bioremediation and energy production. By understanding the fundamental biochemistry that allows these organisms to engage in extracellular electron transfer, researchers can better design and optimize bioelectrochemical systems for a variety of environmental and energy-related applications.
