This research investigates the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, utilizing methods similar to those used in the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process for gold extraction. The study focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages, highlighting the advantages of using activated carbon for the extraction of precious metals. The methodology includes conducting adsorption tests on a pregnant alkaline leach solution derived from cyanide extraction through column leach techniques. Results indicate rapid initial adsorption rates for platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and gold (Au), with recovery rates reaching approximately 90% after two hours. After 72 hours, recoveries of Pt, Pd, and Au achieved near-complete extraction, with 100%, 97.4%, and 99.9% respectively. The findings suggest that activated carbon remains an effective sorbent due to its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, and low operational costs, reinforcing its role in the hydrometallurgical processing of PGMs.
