Tantalum, a heavy metal known for its superconductivity and high resistance, is essential for the production of capacitors used in small electronic devices such as laptops and smartphones. This case study examines tantalum as a strategic resource within the context of non-renewable resource management, drawing attention to its global supply from regions including Central Africa, China, Australia, and Canada. The paper conducts a thorough analysis of tantalum's life cycle, emphasizing its environmental, social, and economic dimensions. Key sections discuss the significance of the material against a backdrop of increasing demand, current and projected supply chains, and the implications of mining in various legal frameworks, particularly focusing on the Democratic Republic of Congo amid accusations of contributing to civil conflict. The interdisciplinary approach incorporates aspects of resource and new institutional economics as well as geography, highlighting security concerns related to resource scarcity. Findings suggest that improved information exchange and reputational risks influence extraction shifts from developing nations to industrialized ones, countering the expectation of a 'race to the bottom'. Nonetheless, existing market mechanisms are hindered by incomplete information and inadequate institutions, particularly in the context of sustainable tantalum management.
