Abstract

Language:

Red mud, a by-product of the aluminum extraction process, contains significant amounts of iron and valuable elements, presenting a potential resource for recovery. The objective of this study was to explore methods for the stepwise recovery of these elements from red mud sourced from the Seydisehir Aluminum Plant in Turkey. The methodology involved a laboratory-scale project focusing initially on the recovery of iron through pyrometallurgical processes, specifically smelting and solid-state reduction. A review of existing literature on smelting studies for iron recovery from red mud was also conducted to inform the project's approach. The results indicated that the treatment of red mud remains a critical area of research, emphasizing the need to address both the environmental impacts associated with its disposal and the potential for resource recovery. Findings suggest that effective recovery strategies could mitigate waste management concerns while simultaneously providing economic benefits through the valorization of red mud. Future work will focus on the selective leaching of nonferrous metals as a subsequent step in the recovery process.
