Department of Industrial and Production Engineering
The Metallography and Material Testing Lab Manual serves as an essential guide for students in the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering. The manual aims to provide an understanding of material behavior under various external loads, including tension, torsion, and bending, while reinforcing theoretical concepts learned in the classroom. Methodologically, students perform a series of experiments that assess mechanical properties such as hardness, wear, creep, and fracture modes, as well as conducting heat treatments and metallographic examinations to investigate microstructures. Results indicate that hands-on experimentation enhances students' comprehension of materials engineering, allowing them to identify material characteristics and conduct heat treatments effectively. The culmination of these activities is the preparation of professionally documented reports summarizing findings, thereby equipping students with practical knowledge and technical skills pertinent to their future careers in engineering.
