Abstract

Language:

The soils surrounding abandoned mining areas are often heavily contaminated with metals due to the discharge and dispersion of mining waste. This study aims to assess the levels of various metallic elements in the soil and vegetation of an abandoned mining area in Hunedoara County, Romania. Soil and vegetation samples were collected from six distinct sites, with the analysis focusing on fourteen soil samples and thirty-six samples of different types of vegetation. The analytical investigations revealed that the levels of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc exceeded the alert and intervention thresholds in the soil samples. Furthermore, the concentration of metals such as calcium, magnesium, cadmium, chromium, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc were found to be above normal ranges in certain vegetation samples. Optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was employed for the analysis. The findings indicate that due to the acidic pH of the soil and the high mobility of certain metals, there is a significant migration of metallic elements from soil to vegetation, highlighting the potential health risks associated with metal contamination in this abandoned mining context.
