Abstract

Language:

Anodic stripping voltammetry with a hanging mercury drop electrode was employed to accurately measure zinc levels in automotive lubricating oils. The study aimed to optimize extraction conditions using a factorial design approach, applying ultrasonic extraction for 60 minutes at 90 °C with 2.0 mL of HCl and 2.0 mL of H2O2. The results demonstrated a determination limit of 6 mg kg−1 after just 30 seconds of deposition time and highlighted the method's good repeatability and low error margin. Moreover, the findings suggest the voltammetric approach offers comparable results to the ASTM D4951 method, while eliminating the need for toxic solvents, high purity reagents, or complex apparatus, making it suitable for routine analyses of both used and unused lubricating oils, whether synthetic or mineral. This method presents a significant advancement in the analysis of metal ions in lubricating oils, crucial for monitoring lubrication properties and mitigating contamination.
