The effect of thiourea on nickel electrodeposition from acidic sulfate solutions was systematically studied to understand its influence on cathodic current efficiency (CE), deposit quality, crystallographic orientations, and surface morphology. The experiments were conducted at 60 °C for a duration of 2 hours, during which variations in thiourea concentration were tested across a range from 2 to 40 mg/dm³. The results indicated a slight decline in CE ranging from 3 to 4 percent with increasing thiourea concentrations. Significant deterioration was observed in the quality of nickel deposits at higher thiourea concentrations, characterized by increased surface morphology defects and higher contamination levels. Cyclic voltammetric studies conducted at 25 °C revealed that lower thiourea concentrations resulted in depolarization behavior of the cathode, whereas at elevated thiourea levels, a mixed behavior was detected. These findings suggest that thiourea concentrations significantly influence not only the current efficiency but also the electrochemical characteristics of nickel deposition, as reflected in the variations in exchange current density (i₀) values.
