Abstract

Language:

This study explores the fracture resistance characterization of thick-section titanium alloys, essential for ensuring the safe use of high-strength materials in structural applications. The objective is to evaluate two rational test procedures—KIC tests for brittle materials and Dynamic Tear (DT) tests—designed to accurately measure fracture resistance. Utilizing the Ratio Analysis Diagram (RAD), which incorporates fundamental linear elastic fracture mechanics principles, the research validates the relationship between KIC and DT parameters through full-thickness tests conducted on 3-in. thick titanium alloy plates. Results demonstrate that both test methods yield comparable accuracy in indexing to the RAD, with the DT test successfully predicting deficiencies in several titanium alloys according to ASTM standards. Consequently, this indicates that the more cost-effective DT test can serve as a reliable predictor of outcomes from the more expensive KIC tests across a comprehensive range of titanium alloys, thus providing valuable insight for structural design that precludes catastrophic fracture extension.
