In this article, the authors have concentrated on a typical material, α alumina, and they consider the various problems that are relevant to its utilization in advanced batteries. This involves the most recent developments in fundamental studies of this compound, mainly the connection between structure and conducting properties, focusing on ion correlation, vibrating, and diffusing ions. The transition from basic research to engineering development is highlighted, especially in the second part of the article, which gives a detailed consideration of α alumina and its behavior in sodium sulfur batteries. Despite the advancements, fundamental factors controlling the durability and viability of α alumina for this application remain poorly understood. The authors propose several mechanisms to explain the failure or degradation of cells, indicating a significant area for further investigation.
