Abstract

Language:

The invention of Volta’s pile instigated a long-lasting controversy regarding the nature of voltaic electricity, primarily accessing the interplay between theoretical constructs and experimental evidence. This paper reviews the origins and evolution of this debate from 1800 to 1850, particularly focusing on arguments surrounding whether electricity generated in a voltaic circuit arises from the mere contact of different metals or through chemical reactions. It highlights key publications and the intellectual backdrop against which these discussions occurred, tracing the controversy's decline in the 1840s and its resurgence in the 1880s with a shift towards contact potential. By examining selected examples, the paper underscores the complexity and nuanced answers arising from the discourse between theory and practicality in electrical experimentation. Although extensive material available cannot be comprehensively covered within the constraints of this work, the selected cases serve to illustrate pivotal moments in resolving theoretical disputes related to voltaic electricity. This study aims to clarify how the interactions and resolutions of these early scientific debates laid foundational perspectives for modern understandings of electrical phenomena.
