The extraction of metals and minerals from the Earth's crust results in the generation of mine wastes, which include diverse by-products that may pose potential health risks. This study aims to explore how the mineralogical and geochemical properties of these mine wastes influence human exposure to toxic substances, routes of entry into the body, and subsequent health effects. Utilizing a comprehensive review of existing literature, the research highlights significant elements of concern, particularly lead, mercury, and arsenic, alongside other hazardous materials like cadmium and uranium that may be found in various deposit types. The findings reveal that the composition of mine wastes is not only variable but also predictable based on geological characteristics, mining techniques, and environmental factors, affecting their toxicity and health implications. The results emphasize the need for continued assessment of mine waste characteristics and their potential impact on human health, contributing to improved risk management strategies in mining regions.
