This short course provides comprehensive insights into the latest advancements in percolation leaching, with a particular focus on its global status as well as specific developments relevant to Southern Africa. The objective is to educate participants on the criteria and specifications necessary for effective heap leach process design, emphasizing the importance of physical characterization for scaling up operations. Methodologically, the course involves a series of lectures delivered by experienced professionals, including Amado Guzman and Jochen Petersen, addressing multiple topics such as reaction and mass transfer phenomena in leaching heaps, industrial monitoring and control, and mathematical modeling techniques used in heap leaching processes. Results indicate that understanding the limitations and speed constraints of heap leaching is crucial for achieving optimalization in industrial applications. Furthermore, the presentations explore future directions for heap leaching technology, including particle size control, scalability of metallurgical tests, and enhanced controllability of heaps, collectively aimed at advancing the effectiveness and sustainability of leaching operations in Southern Africa and globally.
