This study investigates racial and ethnic disparities in the reporting and treatment of health conditions among children aged 2–18 years, using data from the 1996–1997 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. The objective is to determine whether disparities in healthcare utilization differ between physical and behavioral health conditions. A retrospective cohort design was employed, categorizing children as Hispanic, black, or white and analyzing caregiver-reported health conditions and service use. The findings reveal that among over 44 million eligible children, 13–15 percent were Hispanic, 14 percent black, and 68–70 percent white. After adjusting for confounding factors, it was found that Hispanic and black children reported externalizing behavioral conditions less frequently than white children, although black children were more likely to report asthma. Furthermore, both Hispanic and black children demonstrated lower rates of ambulatory visits, and black children received fewer prescription medications compared to their white counterparts. Interestingly, there were no significant differences in emergency room visits or hospitalizations. The results highlight significant disparities in health condition reporting and discretionary service use, which could suggest that existing analytical frameworks in national surveys like the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey may require enhancement to better capture these disparities.
