The mining industry requires high amounts of energy to extract and process resources, including various concentration and refining processes. This study aims to analyze the relationship between ore grade and energy intensity within the global mining sector, focusing on copper as a case study. By employing a rigorous analysis of energy consumption data, this paper addresses sustainability issues related to energy use and ore grades over time. Through quantitative analysis, findings indicate that the average copper ore grade has decreased by approximately 25% over the past decade, while total energy consumption has experienced a 46% increase relative to a 30% increase in production. The research underscores the growing challenge of maintaining sustainable mining practices as resource grades decline and energy demands escalate, thereby highlighting the need for improved resource management strategies within the industry.
