Abstract

Language:

The Copperbelt region of Zambia is renowned for its extensive copper and cobalt mining activities, which have evolved significantly since the early twentieth century. This study aims to highlight the development and implementation of the COSAC process, an innovative technique for the recovery of cobalt and copper from slag, particularly focused on the Chambishi Cobalt Plant. The methodology involved extensive analysis and modification of existing processes, including the refinement of an earlier system by NCCM in the 1970s. Key enhancements were made to the production capabilities, specifically targeting an increase in cobalt recovery from slag that contained both copper and cobalt. The results of the COSAC process indicate a successful recovery of these metals while ensuring operational efficiency and safety through automation and careful management of process variables. This unique approach signifies a groundbreaking advance in hydrometallurgical practices within the base metals industry, positioning Chambishi as a leader in sustainable cobalt and copper production. The study ultimately demonstrates the potential of integrating novel processing techniques into existing operations to enhance resource recovery and minimize waste.
