Abstract

Language:

Participatory modeling engages the implicit and explicit knowledge of stakeholders to create formalized and shared representations of reality. This study addresses key questions surrounding the participatory modeling community, aiming to enhance the understanding and application of participatory approaches in environmental decision-making. By synthesizing insights from various practitioners and researchers, the authors explored themes related to stakeholder engagement, methodological frameworks, and the effectiveness of modeling strategies. Various participatory modeling cases were analyzed, revealing successful examples, common challenges, and lessons learned that can inform best practices. A collaborative framework was proposed to facilitate deeper engagement and ensure that stakeholder perspectives are meaningfully integrated into the modeling process. The findings highlight the importance of shared knowledge and communication in fostering a participatory culture, ultimately leading to more robust and socially acceptable decisions in environmental management. This research underscores the necessity for an interdisciplinary approach that accommodates diverse voices within the modeling community, paving the way for improved outcomes in complex socio-environmental contexts.
