Cyanide is reactive to copper minerals and is not suitable to extract gold from copper bearing ores, leading to investigation of ammoniacal thiosulfate as an alternative lixiviant for leaching. This study explores processes to mitigate the impact of copper minerals on gold leaching, specifically focusing on pre-oxidation of copper sulfide minerals, reducing dissolved oxygen in the lixiviant, and the addition of phosphate anion and strong copper ligands. Experimental results demonstrated that these adjustments could enhance gold extraction to 93%, while thiosulfate consumption was reduced to less than 8 kg/t. The detrimental effects of copper minerals on thiosulfate consumption were significant, with their dissolution identified as a primary factor for increased reagent use and decreased gold recovery. These findings highlight the potential of ammonia-thiosulfate leaching as an effective method for extracting gold from copper bearing ores when optimally managed.
