The recovery of metallic values in heap leaching has evolved significantly from basic flow applied over mineral surface areas to a more dynamic evaluation based on the leach kinetics specific to each material type. This study presents the novel approach implemented by Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde to optimize leach solution application utilizing an intermittent method tailored to the leach rates derived from kinetic studies. Through rigorous investigations involving column tests and large-scale industrial pads, a new application rate scheme was developed, taking into account electrochemical processes, mass transfer, and the kinetics of chemical reactions. This methodology established the Request Rate, which represents the variable demand for leach solution expressed as the ratio of solution volume per mass of copper produced. The application of the Request Rate has significantly enhanced copper production efficiency while enabling considerable cost savings in essential resources like acid, water, and energy. This advancement in leaching technology ultimately underscores the potential for optimized resource recovery in mining operations, specifically targeting secondary sulfide ores.
