Abstract

Language:

Leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate having a specific surface area of about 3 m2/g in 0.5 mol/dm3 HCl solution was conducted at 333 K using hematite (Fe2O3) and ferric chloride (FeCl3) powders, respectively. The leaching with Fe2O3 powder achieved about 75% copper extraction within 24 hours, while leaching with FeCl3 powder yielded about 65% copper. The yield of copper in leaching with Fe2O3 powder is over double that without promoters. High copper extraction can be obtained when a substantial amount of elemental sulfur forms on the solid residue post-leaching. The presence of Fe2O3 powder leads to the precipitation of more elemental sulfur compared to FeCl3 powder. Thus, Fe2O3 proves to be an effective promoter in the leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate using HCl solution.
