The increasing use of paste backfill in underground mining necessitates quantifying the effect of sulphate on strength development and economical performance. This study aims to develop a methodological approach and mathematical model to analyze and predict the strength and cost of underground paste backfill with varying sulphate levels. Results reveal that paste backfill can be conceptualized as a “mixture system.” A material model founded on quadratic functions serves as an effective basis for predicting both the mechanical properties, specifically uniaxial compressible strength (UCS), and economic attributes, such as binder costs. The developed models yield important insights into the relationship between sulphate quantity and mechanical performance, as well as strength predictions at different curing times. It is demonstrated that sulphate significantly impacts the strength of paste backfill, influenced by its concentration, curing duration, and the amount and chemical composition of the cement used.
