Abstract

Language:

Chironji (Buchanania lanzan Spreng.) is an economically significant indigenous tree species in India, appreciated for its edible kernels and medicinal properties. This research aims to consolidate systematic scientific information regarding its production practices and highlight its potential in sustainable agroforestry. A comprehensive overview of the species' distribution, uses, and cultural significance is presented. Methodologically, the study reviews existing literature on cultivation practices, irrigation management, and intercropping strategies for chironji. Results emphasize the tree’s adaptability to dryland ecosystems and its drought tolerance, underlining its potential contribution to livelihood security for forest-dependent communities. Integration of innovative practices, such as appropriate fertilization, mulching, and intercropping with legumes and millets, is explored to maximize land-use efficiency and yield. The findings suggest that adopting standardized cultivation methods could lead to increased utilization of chironji, thereby enhancing food security and sustainability. This study provides a foundation for future research and advocacy to address the challenges faced by underutilized fruit crops in changing agricultural landscapes.
