This paper discusses refractory gold ores, focusing on their mineralogy and the processing techniques currently utilized. It reviews various processing methods in use, along with testing procedures for key methods, outlining the determinants that influence the selection of appropriate processing techniques. A survey of production plants employing pressure oxidation, roasting, and biological oxidation for the treatment of refractory ores is included. The status of emerging processes under development is also briefly addressed. The significance of refractory ores, which account for a smaller portion of gold production but are critical to the overall ore inventory due to their potential for improving project net present value through enhanced recovery methods, is emphasized. This research sheds light on the balance between capital and operational costs of pretreatment processes and the recovery improvements required to justify these expenses. By addressing these aspects, the paper provides valuable insights into the current trends and future directions of refractory gold ore processing.
