Industrial waste is a major environmental concern nowadays, stimulating the thorough study of the minimization and recycling of solid wastes. This article investigates the effectiveness of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag in mitigating heavy metal contamination from leachates. The primary objective was to explore the use of BOF slag in permeable barriers to promote the precipitation of metal ions and retard their transport through landfill liners. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted to assess the performance of BOF slag against various heavy metals in leachate samples. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of BOF slag significantly enhanced the precipitation of metal ions, suggesting its potential as an effective material in waste management applications. Furthermore, the study highlights new opportunities for environmental applications of BOF slag, extending its lifecycle and contributing to sustainable waste management practices. These findings provide a promising avenue for leveraging industrial by-products in addressing environmental challenges related to hazardous waste.
