Abstract

Language:

The inadequacy of sustainable energy is posing significant challenges globally, particularly in the manufacturing sector, which relies heavily on energy-intensive processes such as hot-dip galvanising. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of specific energy consumption and energy consumption benchmarking across four galvanising plants to identify best practices. Using energy baselines as quantitative reference points, the research compares energy performance indicators and quantifies fluctuations in energy performance during the baseline and reporting periods. A quantitative analysis benchmarks the facilities based on factors including the electricity/zinc ratio, electricity/dips ratio, and product tonnage/zinc used ratio. Results reveal that plant 4 demonstrated improved performance over time relative to baseline consumption compared to plants 1, 2, and 3. Furthermore, plant 4 outperformed other facilities post-energy efficiency interventions regarding the electricity/zinc ratio and electricity/product tonnage ratio. The findings indicate significant disparities in the specific energy consumption (SEC) among the plants, leading to the conclusion that SEC alone may not suffice as an energy performance indicator, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive evaluation framework.
