In this study, we reported the basic results of our research about manganese leaching from low-grade wad using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and pyrrhotite. The sulfur-oxidizing bacteria Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans were used in this work. We first cultured sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in the media which contained pyrrhotite and then added wad in that culture media to leach manganese. The results showed that extraction of manganese from the low-grade wad was relatively rapid because of Fe2+ ions and H2S which were produced during the acid dissolution of pyrrhotite. In conclusion, 99.5% of Mn was extracted from wad with 4.4% manganese grade under optimum conditions of 200g/L wad pulp density, 40g/L pyrrhotite concentration, 30°C of leaching temperature, 200rpm of shaking speed, initial pH 1.2 and 2×10^8 cells/mL of initial cell density within 60 hours. The results suggest that manganese extraction method using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and pyrrhotite is potentially applicable to treat low-grade wad.
