5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5-HMF) is an important organic compound for the production of renewable plastics, fine chemicals, and fuel. This study aims to explore the potential of using sugarcane bagasse as a raw material for the production of 5-HMF, replacing edible sources such as glucose and fructose. Experiments were conducted in a batch-type reactor with a slurry of 10 ml of water and 1.2 g of solids, examining the effects of temperature (200°C and 300°C) and reaction time (3 to 30 min) on the yield of 5-HMF. The highest yield was observed at 270°C with a reaction time of 10 minutes. Conversely, yields decreased at temperatures exceeding 300°C and with prolonged reaction times due to the decomposition and polymerization of 5-HMF into byproducts like formic acid and char. These findings suggest that optimal conditions for producing 5-HMF from sugarcane bagasse require a medium range of temperature and short reaction times, thus highlighting its viability as an alternative feedstock.
