Abstract

Language:

The Kansanshi mine in northwestern Zambia has been facing challenges in processing ore due to complex mineralogical suites, resulting in poor recovery rates. The original ore classification system, Mat-Type, inadvertently misclassified ore, leading to inefficiencies in the overall mining process. This study aimed to enhance ore quality and mineral processing efficiency by developing a new geomatallurgical ore classification system, OXMAT. A geomatallurgical analysis was conducted to review Mat-Type, culminating in the implementation of OXMAT which streamlined the classification from 22 to 13 categories. The results indicated that within a specific geological model volume, waste tonnes could be reduced by 19%, while ore tonnes increased by 17%. The findings illustrate the significant value that can be achieved through integrated geomatallurgical modelling in mine planning, enhancing the mining operation's overall productivity and ore quality optimization.
