This study investigates the effects of a designed heat treatment cycle on the microstructure and hardness values of AISI 4140 steel. The objective was to achieve a fine martensite microstructure with the precipitation of spheroidal carbides to enhance mechanical properties. Methodologically, initial studies were conducted to analyze the relationship between the formation of an ultra-fine microstructure and improvements in mechanical properties. Results indicate that the refined microstructure correlates with enhanced tensile strength and overall toughness of the steel, demonstrating the effectiveness of the tailored heat treatment in optimizing the material's performance for additive manufacturing applications. This work was supported by EWI's internal research and development program.
