The present steel production of India is 111.24 MTPA in January 2019, as per the Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India, and the demand for steel production is continuously increasing, thus necessitating the utilization of low/lean grade iron ore. However, there is currently no available technology to directly use these low-grade iron ores, which have become environmental and societal issues as they are often dumped at mine heads and slime ponds. This study aims to develop a scientific method for the effective utilization of low and lean-grade iron ore through magnetizing roasting followed by low-intensity magnetic separation to produce high-grade magnetite. A batch-type fluidized bed roaster was utilized to conduct reduction roasting on a tailing iron ore sample containing 47.47% Fe at a temperature range of 1000°C ± 176°C, with varying residence times from 2 to 10 minutes, using non-coking coal as a reductant. The fluidization velocity was maintained at 1.5–1.7 times the minimum fluidization velocity. The results indicated that a high-grade iron ore with 61.1% ferrous content could be achieved at a 2-minute residence time with yield and recovery rates of 48.4% and 62.5%, respectively.
