Abstract

Language:

Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a solid waste generated in the collection of particulate material during the steelmaking process in electric arc furnaces. The objective of this study was to carry out a chemical and structural characterization of two EAFD samples with different zinc contents. Methodology included optical emission spectroscopy via inductively coupled plasma (ICP), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and Mössbauer spectroscopy analysis on the EAFD samples. Results indicated that XRD measurements revealed the presence of various phases including ZnFe2O4, Fe3O4, MgFe2O4, FeCr2O4, Ca0.15Fe2.85O4, MgO, Mg3O4, SiO2, and ZnO. Furthermore, the phases detected through Mössbauer spectroscopy were ZnFe2O4, Fe3O4, Ca0.15Fe2.85O4, and FeCr2O4. Notably, magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) observed in the XRD patterns as overlapping peaks was not identified in the Mössbauer spectroscopy analysis. This study emphasizes the need for effective management and treatment of EAFD due to its hazardous nature and substantial generation rates.
