The history of mining is typically viewed as a linear progression from traditional methods to industrial practices dominated by global corporations. However, the current gold mining economy encompasses a diverse spectrum of activities characterized by various levels of capital and labor investment. This diversity ranges from artisanal and small-scale mining, often unrecognized legally by governments, to large-scale operations by mining companies. Notably, a significant number of operations, particularly those backed by Chinese investment in countries such as Madagascar, Ghana, and the Philippines, challenge conventional categorization. These operations, though backed by substantial capital and sometimes local political support, remain illegal under national laws and are not fully industrial in nature. Previous studies on gold mining have predominantly depicted a dichotomy between subsistence-oriented artisanal mining and capitalist industrial mining, neglecting the complexity across different regions. Our research aims to create a framework that better captures this diversity, moving away from the simplistic dualist and localized perspectives of earlier work. The insights gained from this analysis contribute to a more nuanced understanding of global gold mining dynamics.
