Abstract

Language:

The utmost goal of this study is to X-ray the imperativeness of power factor (p.f) on the performance of electric power system, which includes electric power generator, transmission and reception (load), and the associated cost implications to electric power industries. System’s performance parameters such as magnetizing current, armature reaction, leakage reactance, air gap length, machine rating, voltage regulation, efficiency, and more are adversely affected by its power factor (p.f). Power factor changes according to loads on a system, which are variable as equipment is switched on and off. Variations in power factor, whether increasing, decreasing, or unity, have a devastating effect on electric power system lines and machines. As power factor is a prevailing concern in electrical industries, achieving a suitable parity for optimum power factor in electrical power systems becomes the target and desire of engineers. The study underscores the critical relationship between power factor and the performance of power systems while suggesting corrective measures for optimization.
