This chapter investigates the metal leaching potential of mine-waste materials in the Boulder River Watershed, with the ultimate goal of classifying the environmental effects posed by mine-waste piles. The objective was to develop comprehensive classification schemes for assessing the impact of historic mining practices and associated waste materials. A combination of field sampling and various geochemical analysis methods, including mixed-acid digestion, passive leach, and the EPA-1312 leach method, was employed to assess the mineralogy and metal content of the waste samples. The results demonstrated significant variability in metal leaching potential based on the mineral composition and weathering characteristics of the mine wastes. Two distinct classification schemes were developed to categorize the mine-waste piles based on their potential environmental effects, providing a framework for future risk assessments in the region. This work contributes valuable insights into the management of mine-waste materials and aids in making informed decisions regarding environmental protection in historically mined areas.
