The extraction of gold from its minerals is a significant hydrometallurgical process, traditionally dominated by cyanidation. This study investigates the potential of amino acids as alternative oxidants for gold dissolution under alkaline conditions. The objective was to analyze the kinetics of gold leaching using electrical contacts and sheets of pure gold, minimizing the effects of pore diffusion. Various oxidant concentrations (0.004, 0.01, and 0.03 M) at pH values of 9.4 and 11 were tested. The results demonstrated that gold extraction percentages were influenced by both oxidant concentration and pH levels, with enhanced extraction observed in the presence of Cu2+ ions, leading to a 100% increase for glycine and a sixfold increase for glutamate compared to glycine solutions. Furthermore, temperature variations (25 and 40 °C) were shown to significantly affect extraction kinetics, indicating that the process is chemically controlled. Given the environmental and health drawbacks associated with cyanide use, this research supports the need for alternative leaching agents, positioning amino acids as a viable option for sustainable gold extraction.
