Abstract

Language:

The roasting and gas handling circuits of Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at the Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA, incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. The objective was to maximize gold recovery from the carbonaceous ore using a process that utilizes Freeport-McMoRan whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen as the oxidizing gas, specifically chosen for its application on Carlin-type “double refractory” ores. An extensive gas cleaning train follows the roaster, consisting of various processes including direct cooling, dust scrubbing, and multiple stages of gas treatment, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The roasted calcine undergoes quenching, neutralization, and thickening before leaching in the carbon-in-leach circuit. The Goldstrike roaster project was successfully commissioned on schedule and within budget, meeting production forecasts shortly after start-up. The selection of proven processes and active involvement of Barrick’s operational teams were key to this project's success.
