Abstract

Language:

Gold/iron oxide catalysts have been prepared and their catalytic performance evaluated for low temperature CO oxidation. The method and temperature used to dry the sample has a significant effect on their catalytic activity. Analysis by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the catalysts contained Au particles; however, catalysts with high and low activity did not always differ in their microstructure. Characterisation using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the difference between the Au(4d) and C(1s) binding energies was generally greater in catalysts with higher catalytic activity. This suggests that the oxidation state of gold is important for activity, as higher binding energy indicates the presence of oxidized species. Therefore, while microstructural differences may not be apparent by TEM, it is the oxidized gold that correlates with high catalytic performance in low temperature CO oxidation processes.
