In the context of increasing global demand and declining economic grades of copper, this paper explores alternative hydrometallurgical leaching options for copper sulphides compared to conventional pyrometallurgical methods. The objective is to highlight the efficacy of three leaching processes: total pressure oxidation, ferric sulphate leaching, and copper chloride leaching, each varying in pressure requirements. A detailed methodology discusses the impact of mineralogy on the selection of processing technology and evaluates specific unit processes involved in these leaching methods. The results suggest that hydrometallurgical processes may present several advantages over traditional pyrometallurgical routes, particularly in the context of complex or marginal copper deposits. Furthermore, the paper addresses two critical aspects necessary for the successful development of copper sulphide leaching projects. Conclusively, insights gained from the study provide valuable guidelines for stakeholders involved in the leaching of copper sulphides, emphasizing the potential for extended viability of existing mines.
