The main focus of this research is to perform a detailed analysis of 4-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) Liquid Crystal (LC). 8CB is a thermotropic LC that exhibits phase transition behaviors as it is heated or cooled through four distinct phases: crystalline (K), Smectic A (SmA), Nematic (N), and Isotropic (I). This study employed Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to explore the thermal characteristics of 8CB across a temperature range of 0°C to 100°C, followed by cooling from 100°C to -40°C at varying ramp rates of 5, 10, and 20 °C/min. The results highlight thermal speed, thermal acceleration, and thermal jerk calculations using Logger Pro against the time taken for mesophase transitions. Observations reveal how the peaks of these transitions function correlatively with thermal parameters, explicating changes in molecular alignment and the impact of temperature on the mesophases along with the flexibility of 8CB’s alkyl tail. This comprehensive analysis contributes to a better understanding of the thermal properties and behavior of 8CB liquid crystals in material sciences.
