This paper discusses the development and optimization of a synergistic solvent extraction system utilizing Versatic 10 and Nicksyn™ to improve the separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium in the hydrometallurgical processing at Tati Nickel in Botswana. The objective was to enhance nickel recovery while minimizing the co-loading of calcium, which can lead to gypsum formation in the extraction circuit. Laboratory tests were conducted to optimize extraction and stripping parameters, applying the optimized system to a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant. Results indicated that the use of the Versatic 10/Nicksyn™ system improved nickel recovery by approximately 0.5% compared to using Versatic 10 alone, with a significant reduction in calcium co-loading. The demonstration plant performance confirmed the laboratory findings, demonstrating the effectiveness of the synergistic system in reducing operational challenges associated with calcium co-extraction. The stability of the extraction mixture was also assessed, confirming no significant changes over 90 days under operational conditions, which supports the system's practical application in industrial settings. This study contributes valuable insights into the optimization of solvent extraction processes for the efficient recovery of nickel from complex mineral feeds.
