The facilities at Palabora Copper (PTY) Ltd in Limpopo, South Africa must comply with the new plant Minimum Emission Standards (MES) by April 1, 2020. Currently, all processes at the PC mine adhere to the MES for existing plants, with the exception of the copper smelter and its corresponding sulfuric acid plant. This paper investigates the enhanced recycling of waste copper smelter dust from both existing and proposed smelter plants. Through experimental methodologies, the study assesses the effectiveness of various recycling techniques and their potential contribution to environmental sustainability. Results demonstrate significant improvements in recycling efficiency, highlighting the potential for these methodologies to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices in the copper industry. The findings suggest that implementing these enhanced recycling processes can ensure compliance with MES regulations while simultaneously improving overall material recovery and reducing harmful emissions.
