Environmental engineering education has evolved significantly in Canada over the past five decades, transitioning from graduate-level specializations to encompassing broader undergraduate programs. This paper reviews the historical development of these educational pathways, highlighting the increased integration of science graduates into engineering disciplines, driven by the necessity for cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing public health and environmental challenges. In the mid-1980s, a marked rise in interest led to the establishment of undergraduate programs, several of which received accreditation, thereby recognizing the diversity encompassed within the field of environmental engineering. The educational frameworks are described, focusing on the essential components required to nurture qualified environmental engineers capable of dealing with contemporary issues. Notably, graduate programs are emphasized for their role in deepening fundamental knowledge of physical, chemical, and biological processes, contributing to the ongoing development of significant new knowledge in the field. This study serves not only to define the current state of environmental engineering education but also to reflect upon the demand for professionals ready to meet the increasing environmental protection needs of society.
