This study was carried out to investigate the behaviour of newborn milk-fed dairy calves in different sized individual pens. Twenty-one Holstein Friesian calves were allocated to three different pen types (small 1 m/C21.5 m, medium 1.5 m/C21.5 m and large 2 m/C22 m) for 60 days following 3-day colostrum feeding. Observations were made twice a week for 1 hour using 5-minute intervals at different times of the day after initiating daily feeding. Calves' activities including eating, ruminating, drinking, walking, standing, playing, and resting were monitored. Results indicated significant differences in the proportions of behaviour related to space allowances, especially in standing behaviour where 1.5 m2 showed higher percentages compared to larger allowances (P < 0.01). However, space allowance did not significantly affect calf starter intake or daily live weight gain (P > 0.05). Thus, while increased space allowed changes in behaviour, no effect was observed on daily live weight gain; nonetheless, calves appeared to prefer medium and large-sized pens based on behavioural results.
