Abstract

Language:

The lateritic nickeliferous iron ore deposits of Central and Northern Greece provide the feed material for the production of an iron-nickel alloy at a pyro-metallurgical plant located in Larymna. This study aims to investigate the upgrading of leach residue, primarily consisting of hematite, quartz, and chromite, obtained from a novel hydrometallurgical processing method based on heap leaching with dilute sulphuric acid. Nickel is recovered from the pregnant leach liquor through solvent extraction and electrowinning. However, the low quality of the initial feed ore, combined with the presence of millions of tons of environmentally challenging slag, necessitates the search for alternative utilization of leach residue. The research tackles the mineralogical issues related to the fine dissemination and interweaving of the mineral phases within the leach residue, which poses challenges in upgrading to a saleable iron concentrate. The potential successful validation of this methodology could offer significant environmental benefits by reducing the volume of waste generated during pyrometallurgical processing of laterites, thereby optimizing resource recovery and minimizing ecological impact.
