In the present study, eight rock samples were analysed using a modified acid-base accounting (ABA) test and the net acid generation (NAG) test to evaluate their suitability for assessing acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of mine waste. The results indicated that rocks with low sulphide-S (0.1–0.4 %) and carbonate mineral contents (≤ 0.2 %) classified as 'potentially acid generating' due to insufficient neutralization potentials, partly resulting from acid production during silicate weathering. The modified ABA test did not consider the contribution of slowly reactive carbonate minerals, which were more evident in the NAG test, classifying some samples into the 'non-acid generating' category. This highlights the importance of the carbonate neutralizing potential (NP) and the NAG test in mine waste screening processes. Additionally, the study found that both acid generation and neutralization reactions significantly affected the solubility of trace metals and aluminum, suggesting that extract contents could be pivotal in assessing contaminant mobility during long-term acid generation.
