This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the ion exchange (IX) technology and its historical significance in hydrometallurgy. It explores the evolution of IX applications, beginning from its ancient references to its modern synthetic resin forms used in metal recovery processes. The objective is to illustrate the diversity and effectiveness of IX in extracting valuable metals, including uranium, gold, and rare earth elements. A methodology incorporating historical developments and technological advancements is employed to detail how IX has been integrated into various metal extraction operations over the past six decades. Key results indicate that IX has become a pivotal method for recovering and purifying metals, with a notable increase in processing plants using IX technology for uranium recovery during the late 1950s. This trend has continued with expansion into other metals, demonstrating the adaptability and efficiency of IX in addressing modern hydrometallurgical challenges. The findings highlight the importance of ongoing research and innovation in IX techniques to enhance metal recovery processes further.
