The growing demand for copper amid supply constraints necessitates innovative approaches to process challenging arsenic-rich deposits. This paper presents the collaborative efforts of Aurubis and Teck in developing the CESL Process, a technology aimed at economically and responsibly processing arsenic-bearing copper concentrates. Bench and pilot scale testing was conducted on four different concentrates, with arsenic grades ranging from 0.7% to 4.6%, focusing on key minerals such as enargite and tennantite. Results demonstrated a high extraction rate of copper at 97%, while effectively deporting nearly all arsenic to the residue, thereby mitigating the environmental hazards associated with arsenic disposal. Ongoing studies are being conducted to evaluate the medium-term stability of the resulting residue. This research underscores the importance of advancing metallurgical technologies to unlock the value of complex copper resources, ensuring sustainable practices in the face of rising global mineral demand.
